“…We extracted pertinent information from clinical and administrative databases maintained by the UWM system to identify a cohort of adults aged ≥20 years diagnosed with sleep apnea between January 2005 and December 2014 (N=34,402). This cohort included individuals with obstructive and/or central sleep apnea; however, given that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (alone, or in combination with elements of central sleep apnea) accounts for the vast majority of sleep apnea cases (>90%), 35 our results are most reflective of associations with OSA. We identified sleep apnea diagnoses based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes [ICD-9-CM] (codes 327.20, 327.21, 327.23, 327.27, 327.29, 780.51, 780.53 and 780.57).…”
