Sleep Duration and Waking Activities in Relation to the National Sleep Foundation’s Recommendations: An Analysis of US Population Sleep Patterns from 2015 to 2017

Abstract: The objective was to investigate the association between time spent on waking activities and nonaligned sleep duration in a representative sample of the US population. We analysed time use data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), 2015–2017 (N = 31,621). National Sleep Foundation (NSF) age-specific sleep recommendations were used to define recommended (aligned) sleep duration. The balanced, repeated, replicate variance estimation method was applied to the ATUS data to calculate weighted estimates. Less th… Show more

“…Workers reporting longer work hours were, on average, sleeping <6 hours/24-hour period on workdays. These findings were consistent with other studies, demonstrating long work hours encroach on time normally set aside for sleep (Mireku & Rodriguez, 2021). Due to these working conditions, shift workers and those working long work hours often lacked the opportunity for sleep and were needing to sleep at times outside the normal bedtime hours.…”

“…15 Fewer than half of Americans are getting the National Sleep Foundation guideline-recommended sleep time. 16 Sleep disturbances increase the risk of certain diseases, including obesity, 17 diabetes mellitus (DM), 18 cancer, 19 cardiovascular disease, 20 21 Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. 22 Sleep duration (SPD) is also closely associated with the auditory system diseases.…”

“…The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommended 7–9 h of sleep for young adults and 7–8 h for older adults [ 15 ]. However, only 45% of individuals in the US had sleep durations that mapped onto the National Sleep Foundation recommendations on weekdays [ 16 ]. Regarding the different patterns of sleep on weekdays and weekends, a study on NHANES provided a series of benchmark estimates of sleep duration and sleep timing for the US population [ 17 ].…”
