“…Wilckens et al 42 reported that higher wake after sleep onset (i.e., longer periods of wakefulness occurring after defined sleep onset), and shorter total sleep time, were linearly associated with slower response time across single-task (p = 0.10) and switching blocks (p = 0.005) considered a proxy for condition-independent psychomotor slowing 47 ; however, these associations were also observed in healthy controls and therefore not specific to MDD. Müller et al 39 found that 25-40% of participants with MDD reported 'almost always' daytime sleepiness, non-restorative sleep, attention deficits or memory complaints, with significant correlations between these variables (p < 0.05), as well as curvilinear associations between sleep duration and sleep quality (quadratic contrast, p < 0.05). However, Peng et al 40 reported no significant association between cognition and sleep disturbance (r = 0.029, p = 0.219) in adolescents with first episode MDD.…”

“…Of the 14 included studies, eight included people with BD (Boland et al, 2015; Bradley et al, 2020; Kanady et al, 2017; Laskemoen et al, 2019; Samalin et al, 2017; Ullah, 2017; Volkert et al, 2015), five included people with MDD (Cabanel et al, 2019; Cha et al, 2019; Müller et al, 2017; Peng et al, 2018; Wilckens et al, 2020), and one included both people with MDD and people with BD (Soehner & Harvey, 2012) (see Table 1 ). These studies were published between years 2012-2020.…”

“…First, our study did not have access to chronic disease diagnoses from the participants. Previous research has found that non-restorative sleep is common among certain conditions, such as depression (Müller et al, 2017) and fibromyalgia (Azad et al, 2000), but no research to our knowledge has examined restorative sleep and chronic conditions. It is important to note that the present study did not measure sleep disorders other than insomnia, such as obstructive sleep apnea.…”

“…B. stö rende Geräusche durch Bettnachbarn, Verkehrslärm oder nächtliche Kontrollen durch Pflegende oder ärztliches Per sonal. Neben Lärm können aber auch Schmerzen, depres sive Verstimmungen, die Dauer eines Krankenhausaufent halts oder die Atmosphäre der Station die Schlafqualität mindern (Müller, Olschinski, Kundermann & Cabanel, 2017;Park & Kim, 2017).…”
