Sleep Pathologies in Depression and the Clinical Utility of Polysomnography

Abstract: Abnormal sleep accompanies many psychiatric conditions, but has long been recognized as a particularly conspicuous feature of affective disorders. More than a mere epiphenomenon, the powerful link between sleep and mood regulation is most dramatically demonstrated by the high efficacy of sleep deprivation in alleviating depression. Indeed, the sleep abnormalities that accompany depression may be due to the same neuropathologies that are responsible for its mood and cognitive symptoms. This powerful link betwee… Show more

“…It is well known that the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the stress response systems, and chronic stress induces dysregulation of the HPA axis. Hyperactivity of the HPA axis results in hyperarousal of the nervous system and decreases sleeping time and sleep quality 32) . “…However, it is unclear whether sleep disturbances are only present during depressive episodes or sleep abnormalities predate the depressive episode and reflect a vulnerability to depression (Sculthorpe & Douglass, 2010). Cognitive impairments seen in sleep deprivation mimic other symptoms of depression, including fatigue and a diminished ability to think, concentrate, and/or make decisions (Peterson & Benca, 2011).…”
