Background: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is a common condition that includes shoulder pain and limited movement. Despite more than 100 years of AC treatment, the most efficacious treatment remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using acupuncture for AC. Methods: Thirty participants with AC were randomly assigned to acupuncture (A) or sham acupuncture (SA) groups. The participants received 15 acupuncture sessions over 6 weeks, and follow-up occurred for an additional 4 weeks thereafter. The primary clinical outcome was the numeric rating scale (NRS) for shoulder pain 6 weeks from the baseline. Secondary outcomes included range of motion (ROM) in the shoulder, the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), the EuroQol-5 dimensions (EQ-5D), the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and the patient global impression of change (PGIC). Results: Thirty participants were enrolled out of 37 screened individuals. Recruitment was conducted between August 2014 until May 2015. A total of 28 participants (93%) completed the 6-week intervention, and 26 participants (87%) completed the study. NRS, ROM, SPADI, EQ-5D, PSQI, and PGIC scores improved in both the experimental group and the sham group after 6 weeks, but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. Adverse events were reported by 12 participants, although these events were not associated with acupuncture. Conclusion: A future RCT for AC may be feasible with some modifications to the recruitment plan and the secondary outcome measurement methods.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate when the quality of life improve after rotator cuff repair. Materials and Methods: Eighty-five consecutive cases with rotator cuff repair were studied. Patients completed the visual analogue scale (VAS), University of California Los Angeles scale (UCLA), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon's scale (ASES), Korean Shoulder scale (KSS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF) preoperatively and at postoperative 3, 6, and 12 months. For evaluation of serial recovery pattern, section I (preoperatively-postoperative 3 months), section II (postoperative 3 months-postoperative 6 months), and section III (postoperative 6 months-postoperative 12 months) were divided. Results: The mean WHOQOL-BREF score was significantly improved from 58.8 preoperatively to 66.4 at postoperative 12 months, with improvement of VAS, ULCA, ASES, and KSS scores. On serial recovery pattern, all measurements in section I, VAS, UCLA, and KSS scores in section II, and UCLA score in section III, were significantly improved. Female sex had a negative effect on all outcome measurements at postoperative 12 months. Conclusion: Our results showed improvement of quality of life as well as reduced pain and increased function at 3 months after rotator cuff repair. Further recovery of clinical outcomes showed gradual progress until postoperative 12 months.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with primary frozen shoulder in a Korean population. Methods: A total of 1,373 patients whose shoulders were diagnosed with primary frozen shoulder across 11 resident-training hospitals were reviewed retrospectively. Various demographic characteristics and clinical characteristics according to gender and presence of diabetes were evaluated. Results: The average age of patients was 55.4 years. Gender proportion was 58.3% females and 41.7% males. The frozen shoulder involved the non-dominant arm in 60.7% of patients and the bilateral arms in 17.6% of patients. The average duration of symptoms was 8.9 months, and 51.3% of patients had experienced nocturnal pain. Comorbidities associated with frozen shoulder in our sample of patients included diabetes (18.7%), cardiovascular diseases (17.7%), thyroid diseases (5.4%), and cerebrovascular diseases (3.6%). The diabetic group was correlated with the following demographic and clinical characteristics: old age, involvement of the dominant arm, nocturnal pain, long duration of symptoms, and no history of trauma. Further, we found that, in males, having a frozen shoulder was significantly correlated with a history of trauma; in females, having a frozen shoulder was significantly correlated with having thyroid diseases. Conclusions: These demographic data of primary frozen shoulder in the Korean population were consistent with those of previously reported epidemiologic studies. Primary frozen shoulder with diabetes was correlated with old age, bilateral involvement, long duration of symptoms, and nocturnal pain. (Clin Shoulder Elbow 2015;18(3):133-137)
