Sliding Mode Control with Application to Fault-Tolerant Control: Assessment and Open Problems

Abstract: This paper is prepared within a collaboration between the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, which is a Mexican research institute that manages research on sliding-mode control theory, and the ARIA research team of the Intégration du Matériau au Système Lab., a French research group that engages research on model-based fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control theories. The paper reviews the application of sliding mode control techniques to fault tolerant control and provides perspectives leading to posing some … Show more

“…More recently, several modern control with a nonlinear approach has been carried out. For instance model predictive control (MPC) [20,21], backstepping control [22], adaptive control [23], sliding mode control (SMC) [24], and finally intelligent control [12,19]. From those control methods, the SMC has been successfully applied to wide specific areas including nonlinear systems, MIMO systems, and stochastic systems [25][26][27].…”

“…The SMC is known as one of the variable structure controls where high-speed switching action is carried out to eliminate the initial errors for excellent robustness in achieving an offset-free tracking approach [6]. From the study of SMC by Ma, Zhao and Spurgeon, the SMC algorithms in discrete form is discovered to reduce the chattering effect caused by the infinite switching frequency [7].…”
