Slightly Bimetric Gravitation

Abstract: The inclusion of a flat metric tensor in gravitation permits the formulation of a gravitational stress-energy tensor and the formal derivation of general relativity from a linear theory in flat spacetime. Building on the works of Kraichnan and Deser, we present such a derivation using universal coupling and gauge invariance.Next we slightly weaken the assumptions of universal coupling and gauge invariance, obtaining a larger "slightly bimetric" class of theories, in which the Euler-Lagrange equations depend on… Show more

“…Existing proposals for modifications of general relativity, such as bimetric [11,12,13,14] and non-symmetric [21,22] theories of gravity, but also generalized string geometries including the antisymmetric Neveu-Schwarz two form [2,3,4], may be fruitfully reinterpreted from the point of view of area metric geometry. Rather than the individual metrics or two-forms in such approaches, it is then only the induced area metric that carries physical significance.…”

“…Ранее мы выводили теорию Эйнштейна и другие эффективно геометрические теории, используя калибровочно-инвариантные свободно-полевые теории и универ-сальное взаимодействие [12], в значительной мере на основании работ Крейчнана [4] и Дезера [9]. Если ранее гравитационный потенциал выбирался в виде симметрич-ного ковариантного тензорного поля ранга 2, то теперь мы обобщим этот вывод для случая плотности почти любого веса, ковариантной или контравариантной валент-ности.…”

“…In contrast to GTR-exceptionalism, one might take the view, more common among particle physicists, that Einstein's equations describe a self-interacting massless spin 2 field, much as Maxwell's equations describe a spin 1 field and the Yang-Mills equations describe a set of self-interacting spin 1 fields [Fierz and Pauli, 1939, Rosen, 1940, Papapetrou, 1948, Gupta, 1954, Kraichnan, 1955, Feynman et al, 1995, Ogievetsky and Polubarinov, 1965, Weinberg, 1965, Sexl, 1967, Deser, 1970, Weinberg, 1972, van Nieuwenhuizen, 1973, Veltman, 1981, Fang and Fronsdal, 1979, Pitts and Schieve, 2001, Boulanger and Esole, 2002. The distinctive features of GTR are then seen as incidental (though important) technical consequences of gravity's having spin 2 rather than spin 1.…”
