Slotted Liner Design Optimization for Sand Control in SAGD Wells

Abstract: To recover heavy oil and bitumen from the highly unconsolidated reservoirs of the Western Canada oilsands fields using the horizontal well method, and in particular the thermal in situ method of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), some forms of sand control, such as slotted liners and wire-wrapped screens (WWS), are generally required to limit sand production and maintain well productivity. Over the past two decades, a number experimental and analytical studies have been performed for developing industry g… Show more

“…Slotted liners are the most common type of completions used for SAGD wells [17][18][19]. The common procedure followed in the slotted liner completion involves running in (inserting) an intermediate casing after the first drilling of the top boundary of the reservoir.…”

“…The liner load capacity component of the assessment can be estimated using analytical methods or numerical modeling, with consideration of combined axial loads (including bending) and torque (Xie et al 2009, Xie 2015. The liner load capacity envelope is generally developed based on the primarily elastic-response design approach.…”

“…The load capacity envelope of the liner typically includes the axial tensile and compressive force and torque components (Xie et al 2009, Xie 2015. Axial loads include the effects of the buoyant weight of the liner, the weight of installation string (e.g.…”
