Slow-growing pollen-tube of colchicine-induced 2n pollen responsible for low triploid production rate in Populus

“…In this study, crossing high‐temperature‐induced 2n pollen in P. canescens with haploid female gametes in P. alba to create hybrid triploids was conducted and 42 triploids were produced. The highest triploid production rate was 10.71%, which was slightly lower than that of cross combination with colchicine‐induced 2n pollen shown by Kang et al () and Zhao et al (). The observed triploid production rate was significantly lower than the expected triploid production rate, indicating that similar to colchicines‐induced 2n pollen, the high‐temperature‐induced 2n pollen had weak competition during fertilization compared with haploid pollen.…”
