Sm-Doped PIN-PMN-PT Transparent Ceramics with High Curie Temperature, Good Piezoelectricity, and Excellent Electro-Optical Properties

Abstract: Transparent piezoelectric materials are capable of coupling several physical effects such as optics, acoustics, electricity, and mechanical deformation together, which expands applications for mechanical-electro-optical multifunctional devices. However, piezoelectricity, transparency, and Curie temperature restrict each other, so it is difficult to achieve high piezoelectricity with both good transparency and a high Curie point. In this paper, Sm-doped 24Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 -42Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -34PbTiO … Show more

“…Due to the piezoelectric properties of RE materials, the use of RE ions as dopants can increase the piezoelectricity of a material. The incorporation of Eu [ 47 ] and Sm [ 48 ] dopants into the PMN-PT ceramic system, for instance, increases piezoelectricity. RE doping generates electrostatic interactions (such as H-bonding) [ 49 ] and stabilizes the crystal structure of NPs, which decreases their dielectric constant, in turn facilitating the distribution of polarized electric fields on the NP surface for increased composite piezoelectricity [ 45 ].…”

“…However, achieving both piezoelectricity and transparency in ceramics is challenging because they are generally conflicting, as exemplified in (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PLZT) ceramics [15,16]. To overcome these challenges, extensive efforts have been made to develop materials with both transparent and piezoelectric properties.…”

“…and B 2 represents high-valence cations (such as Nb, Sb, Ta, etc. ), are usually selected as a third component to be introduced into a BS-PT system due to their excellent dielectric and piezoelectric properties [11][12][13]. The introduction of relaxor ferroelectric end members not only improves the relaxor characteristics and electrical properties, but also can form a ternary solid solution formed with the BS-PT system, and extend its MPB region from a point to a line, which can achieve performance regulation in a wider range.…”
