SMA-Based System for Environmental Sensors Released from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract: Abstract:In the work at hand, a shape memory alloy (SMA)-based system is presented. The system, conceived for releasing environmental sensors from ground or small unmanned aerial vehicles, UAV (often named UAS, unmanned aerial system), is made of a door, integrated into the bottom of the fuselage, a device distributor, operated by a couple of antagonistic SMA springs, and a kinematic chain, to synchronize the deployment operation with the system movement. On the basis of the specifications (weight, available s… Show more

“…Such devices are finding more and more applications in several market sectors, including the automotive, heavy industry, as well as nuclear power plants. In the aeronautical field, some applications may be found on small UAV [ 34 , 35 ]. Recently, Boeing has installed an SMA torque tube within aircraft flight test hardware [ 36 ], while NASA tested SMA-actuated foldable wings in flight [ 37 ].…”

“…The damping coefficient, f.i., arrives at the 25% of its initial value after a few hundreds of cycles. However, the already mentioned compactness and high-energy density encourage the adoption of these materials for adaptive applications, ranging from morphing wings themselves, [61][62][63] to deployable antennas 64 and stowable systems 65 and landing gears. 67 Table 1.…”
