Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth in Strongyloidiasis

Abstract: Small bowel bacterial growth was studied in patients with strongyloidiasis, and the results were compared to controls. We concluded that in strongyloidiasis there is small bowel bacterial overgrowth, and so it should be considered in the pathogenesis of some of the gastrointestinal manifestations and complications of strongyloidiasis.

“…In these cases a superficial necrotizing inflammation is typically found in the intestine. Bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine is commonly found in people suffering from strongyloidosis [12]. In our case it seems likely that the bacterial overgrowth occurred secondary to the parasitic infestation of the intestinal mucosa.…”

“…It colonizes the duodenum and upper jejunum, and usually affects the mucosal layer of the intestine, although the whole intestinal wall may be involved in severe cases (23)(24)(25)(26). Also, our group has described small bowel overgrowth (27) which could explain in part the high frequency of Gramnegative sepsis associated with the severe cases with widespread dissemination of larvae (28). Intestinal permeability has not been evaluated in strongyloidiasis.…”

“… 1 There are reports of small bowel bacterial overgrowth in patients with S. stercoralis infestation. 2 It has been speculated that systemic sepsis in patients with fatal strongyloidiasis is caused by bacteria that may originate in the intestinal lumen. 1,2 However, there are no reports documenting this suggestion.…”

“… 2 It has been speculated that systemic sepsis in patients with fatal strongyloidiasis is caused by bacteria that may originate in the intestinal lumen. 1,2 However, there are no reports documenting this suggestion. We report on a patient with S. stercoralis infestation presenting as malabsorption syndrome in whom we could demonstrate septicemia with organisms isolated from jejunal aspirate.…”
