Small cell carcinoma of the head and neck

Abstract: Treatment methods for patients with small cell carcinoma of the head and neck are changing. Increasing clinical experience with these tumors and a better appreciation of patterns of recurrence, the need for thorough tumor staging, and the importance of chemotherapy as a form of primary therapy have contributed to these changes. Current concepts regarding small cell carcinoma arising in the head and neck are reviewed. Reported results of treatment for a variety of head and neck sites and site-specific relapse r… Show more

“…There were too few numbers to examine the role of surgery in the early stage patients. The improved survival compared to other disease sites, may be due to an observation noted by Baugh et al, that sinonasal small cell carcinomas tend to recur locally rather than as distant metastases, compared to laryngeal and pharyngeal sites [23]. The shortest overall survival was observed in patients with small cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx with a median survival of 15.1 months.…”

“…The role of staging in small cell neuroendocrine tumours is less clear and has not been shown to correlate well with overall survival [9]. Our patient had metastases to ipsilateral lymph nodes at the time of diagnosis, but no evidence of metastatic disease elsewhere.…”

“…An early study by Baugh et al . reported comparative medial survival rates of up to 19 months in those who received chemotherapy, compared with 11 months in those who did not receive any chemotherapy [9]. …”

“…In EPSCC of the head and neck, tracheal small-cell carcinoma shows the worst prognosis, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal small-cell carcinomas have intermediate survival, while those of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and parotid gland have the best prognosis. The lungs, liver, and bone are the common sites for distant metastases from head and neck small-cell carcinomas [11]. …”
