Small-data shock formation in solutions to 3D quasilinear wave equations: An overview

Abstract: In his 2007 monograph, D. Christodoulou proved a remarkable result giving a detailed description of shock formation, for small H s -initial conditions (s sufficiently large), in solutions to the relativistic Euler equations in three space dimensions. His work provided a significant advancement over a large body of prior work concerning the long-time behavior of solutions to higher-dimensional quasilinear wave equations, initiated by F. John in the mid 1970's and continued by S. Klainerman, T. Sideris, L. Hörma… Show more

“…Christodoulou's results were extended [60] to a larger class of equations and data by Speck (see also the survey article [23], joint with Holzegel, Klainerman, and Wong). In particular, for data given on R 3 , he proved a sharp small-data shock formation result for equations (1.1a) or (1.3a) whenever the null condition fails.…”

“…1.3 was essentially a simple version of this method. Readers may consult [23,60] for detailed examples derived with the help of sharp techniques paralleling the ones employed in the present article.…”
