Small Fiber Neuropathy Following Vaccination

Abstract: This case report describes an acute onset of non-length-dependent SFN potentially related to human papillomavirus vaccine administration. Literature review includes several similar case studies, and various pathological processes have been proposed for vaccine-associated polyneuropathies. Some theories describe immune-mediated hypersensitivity to the solvents/adjuvants and/or invasion of nervous system through a prolonged, less virulent infection. However, the lack requires that evidence must be carefully revi… Show more

“…Single studies have previously described SFN and END reduction in young patients with pain symptoms. Only a few children with pain showed a severely reduced END consistent with the findings in our study . In our cohort, the degree of END did not correlate with pain distribution or pain progression.…”

“…107 It was followed by dozens of similar case reports of POTS following HPV vaccination, all within 2 months of receiving the vaccine. [108][109][110][111][112][113][114] Among these were two case series, compiling a total of 88 women, all presenting no more than 2 months following vaccination, complaining of orthostatic intolerance, with additional complaints such as nausea, palpitations, fatigue and neuropathic pain. Out of the two series, a total of 49 (55%) fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for POTS.…”

“…Although SFN in children is difficult to diagnose because of the absence of normative data for intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) in children, several case reports have been published. [16][17][18][19] 2.1 | Quality of life SFN leads to a significant reduction in the overall QoL, 20 at least in part due to pain and autonomic symptoms. Thermal thresholds and reduced IENFD have been reported to correlate with the deterioration of QoL.…”
