Small satellites and the DARPA/Air Force FALCON program

Abstract: The FALCON ((Force Application and Launch from CONUS) program is a technology demonstration effort with three major components: a Small Launch Vehicle (SLV), a Common Aero Vehicle (CAV), and a Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle (HCV). Sponsored by DARPA and executed jointly by the United States Air Force and DARPA with NASA participation, the objectives are to develop and demonstrate technologies that will enable both near-term and far-term capability to execute time-critical, global reach missions. The focus of this p… Show more

“…Two typical kinds of platforms have been researched in recent years. One is the huge-volume slow-moving platform, e.g., High Altitude Airship (HAA) [13], and the other is ultrasonic aircraft, e.g., FALCON [14]. And the nearspace SAR has been becoming a revolutionizing remote sensing mission [15].…”

“…For the first part of the mission, the top-level requirements for the operational system for the SLV are 1,000 lb payload (with the potential for an increase) to a 28.5 o circular orbit, 100 nm altitude (baseline orbit for concept comparison) LEO (Weeks et al, 2005). 10 The vehicle would have low recurring costs (less than $5 million), reach alert status within 24 hr, and then launch within 24 hr.…”
