Small‐scale fisheries and local food systems: Transformations, threats and opportunities

Abstract: Fish from marine and inland capture fisheries are amongst the most eaten foods and traded commodities in the world and therefore contribute significantly to supporting livelihoods, food security and health (Béné et al., 2016;Kawarazuka & Béné, 2010;Loring et al., 2019). According to FAO (2020), 120 million people are dependent on fisheries for their livelihoods, almost 97 per cent of those people are in developing countries and more than 90 per cent participate in small-scale fisheries (FAO, 2020;Loring et al.… Show more

“…These integrative efforts should take a variety of forms and learn from prior efforts (e.g. Allison & Ellis, 2001; Arthur et al, 2022; Campling & Havice, 2018; Chuenpagdee & Jentoft, 2019; Foley & Mather, 2018; Kooiman et al, 2005; Ommer et al, 2011; Weeratunge et al, 2014). “…The dried fish literature is a resource on which to draw as the fisheries literature shifts towards viewing fisheries as food systems (e.g. Arthur et al, 2022; Campling & Havice, 2018; Foley & Mather, 2018; Simmance et al, 2022), and in relation to the Small‐scale Fisheries Guidelines (FAO, 2015) and the Sustainable Development Goals (HLPE, 2020). At the same time, the general fisheries literature provides tools and insights with which to address important blind spots in the literature on dried fish, particularly around governance (e.g.…”

“…Fish is an important source of protein, especially where other sources of animal protein are scarce or expensive ( Béné and Heck, 2005 ). The SSF provides 32% of animal protein consumed in Africa, rising to 70% in coastal areas ( Gyan et al., 2020 ; Arthur et al., 2022 ). In addition, the SSF creates household income that increases access to other sources of food ( Béné and Heck, 2005 ; Obiero et al., 2019 ).…”

“…Regarding variable costs relating mainly on the oil price, more dynamic and/or uncertain features should be taken into account. More globally, paying more attention to food security and catch viability goals is another key challenge in particular for tropical small-scale fisheries and seafood systems (Béné et al, 2007;Arthur et al, 2022).…”
