Smallest Carbon Nanotube Is3Åin Diameter

Abstract: Previous energetic considerations have led to the belief that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of 4 A in diameter are the smallest stable CNTs. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we find that a stable 3 A CNT can be grown inside a multiwalled carbon nanotube. Density functional calculations indicate that the 3 A CNT is the armchair CNT(2,2) with a radial breathing mode at 787 cm(-1). Each end can be capped by half of a C12 cage (hexagonal prism) containing tetragons.

“…Attempts to synthesize polytwistane in a more direct fashion from acetylene itself are ongoing in our laboratory and will be reported in due course. The relationship of polytwistane to recently reported diamond nanowires 15 and ultra-small carbon nanotubes 16 is also under investigation. To a solution of tetracyclotetradecadiene 11 (30.0 mg, 0.161 mmol, 1.00 eq.)…”

“…In summary, we have described the first synthesis of racemic tritwistane (3), which also yielded a variety of interesting byproducts. Several of these, such as compounds 16,19 and 30, bear a novel carbon skeleton. Our results indicate that N-type additions across laticyclic polyenes are not a viable way to access longer oligotwistanes or polytwistane (8) due to a variety of possible side reactions and difficulties associated with the procurement of precursors.…”

“…The first two SWNTs (diameters 5.51 and 6.36 Å, respectively) can be manufactured, whereas the existence of the third one (diameter 3.38 Å) is still questionable. Some energetic considerations 25 have proposed a lower bound of 4 Å for stable carbon nanotubes, but a recent study by Zhao et al 26 provides evidence that 3 Å diameter tubes can be grown inside multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and that the tube in question is most probably an armchair CNT(2,2).…”

“…Actually, many studies have been performed to achieve this goal. For instance, small single wall CNTs with 0.3 nm 44,45 and 0.43 nm 46 diameters have already been synthesized. Using solid alloy catalysts, Feng et al have prepared highly homogeneous (higher than 92%) SWCNT.…”
