griculture is the backbone of any nation, which supplies with the needed foods, feeds, fiber and fuel. The crucial sector has become more flexible and advanced due to the enormous progress in the bioinformatics, which penetrates all fields in our life. Smart agriculture is an important page in the history of global agriculture, which already used several advanced technologies during different agricultural practices starting from the pre-cultivation, cultivation, seedling, fertilization, weed detection, irrigation, spraying pesticides, till harvesting and also pot-harvest. Many sectors have been involved in smart farming like smart irrigation, and all precision farming practices for improving and management of the agriculture especially in the developing countries, which need more supporting from their governments even at the private sector and the small farms level. This short communication is a call for submitting articles on smart farming and its applications in different agricultural practices including irrigation, fertilization, and etc. Due to smart agriculture mainly depends on the bioinformatics, this technology has several open questions particularly their applications, models, and security, which need further investigations.

Wireless technologies are increasingly relevant in different activities and lines of the economy, as well as in the daily life of people and companies. The advent of fifth generation networks (5G) implies a promising synergy with the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing for more automations in production processes and an increase in the efficiency of information transmission, managing to improve the efficiency in decision-making through tools such as big data and artificial intelligence. This article presents a description of the 5G implementation process in Colombia, as well as a revision of opportunities when combining with IoT in featured sectors of the departmental development plans, such as agriculture, tourism, health, the environment, and industry. Results shows that the startup of 5G in Colombia has been a slow process, but there are comparisons with similar procedures in other developed countries. Additionally, we present examples of 5G and IoT applications which can be promoted in Colombia, aimed at improving the quality of life of their habitants and promoting economic development.

Technology and Data Fusion Methods to Enhance Site-Specific Crop Monitoring

Digital farming approach merges new technologies and sensor data to optimize the quality of crop monitoring in agriculture. The successful fusion of technology and data is highly dependent on the parameter collection, the modeling adoption, and the technology integration being accurately implemented according to the specified needs of the farm. This fusion technique has not yet been widely adopted due to several challenges; however, our study here reviews current methods and applications for fusing technologies and data. First, the study highlights different sensors that can be merged with other systems to develop fusion methods, such as optical, thermal infrared, multispectral, hyperspectral, light detection and ranging and radar. Second, the data fusion using the internet of things is reviewed. Third, the study shows different platforms that can be used as a source for the fusion of technologies, such as ground-based (tractors and robots), space-borne (satellites) and aerial (unmanned aerial vehicles) monitoring platforms. Finally, the study presents data fusion methods for site-specific crop parameter monitoring, such as nitrogen, chlorophyll, leaf area index, and aboveground biomass, and shows how the fusion of technologies and data can improve the monitoring of these parameters. The study further reveals limitations of the previous technologies and provides recommendations on how to improve their fusion with the best available sensors. The study reveals that among different data fusion methods, sensors and technologies, the airborne and terrestrial LiDAR fusion method for crop, canopy, and ground may be considered as a futuristic easy-to-use and low-cost solution to enhance the site-specific monitoring of crop parameters.
