Smart Grid Security by Embedding S-Box Advanced Encryption Standard

Abstract: Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems continuously monitor the real-time processes in the smart grid. The system software, which is based on a human-machine interface (HMI), makes intelligent decisions to assist the system operator and perform normal grid management activities. The management of SCADA networks and monitoring without proper security is a major concern, as many grids and plant networks still lack necessary monitoring and detection systems, making them vulnerable to attack. SCA… Show more

“…Raju Deril, Eleswarapu Lalitha, Pranav Muppidi Sai, and Sinha Rupesh Kumar propose a multi-level image security scheme combining elliptic curves, magic matrix, and AES [11]. Niraj Kumar, Vishnu Mohan Mishra, and Adesh Kumar address smart grid security with an S-box AES implementation [12]. Nabilah Abughazalah, Majid Khan, Noor Munir, Ammar S. Alanazi, and Iqtadar Hussain present a generalized AES in a Galois field with any characteristic p. This innovative approach adjusts all AES steps for the new enhancement, offering increased keyspace, robustness, and additional confusion abilities [13].…”

“…Moreover, four additive secret-sharing-based sub-protocols such as secure action selection, SMAX, SEle and SGry were developed to perform the atomic operations efficiently and securely. Kumar Niraj et al, developed a hardware chip integrated S-box advanced encryption standard algorithm to secure the smart grid SCADA system and chip performance is evaluated using field programmable gate array with different key sizes and grid sizes [88]. In [116], the authors present a lightweight fault-tolerant privacy-preserving data aggregation strategy using modified Paillier cryptosystem, ECC, Chinese-remainder theorem, and hash function technique.…”
