Smart Laminated Shells and Deflection Control Strategy with Optimal Voltage

Abstract: The present paper deals with a finite element analysis procedure for smart laminated composite shells based on Reissner' s principle. Hermitian polynomials have been used for the development of curved surfaces and these permit the construction of any arbitrary shell geometry. The piezoelectric constitutive equations are incorporated in the shell structural constitutive equations. The finite element codes are accordingly developed and results are obtained for various composite laminated shell panels. A deflecti… Show more

“…For validation, the static control problem of a simply supported smart composite spherical shell panel, analysed earlier by Bhattacharya et al (2000) is taken up. The shell has a square planform (0.9 m × 0.9 m), and is thin, having a / h = 100 .…”

“…A uniformly distributed pressure load of 10 Nm 2 is applied on the top surface of the shell. The central deflection obtained by the present ZIGT FE is presented and compared in Table 1 with the FSDT solution of Bhattacharya et al (2000) under uniform actuation potential of ϕ 0 = 0 and ϕ 0 = 100 V applied on the actuator surface. The results compare very well with the reference results for all laminate configurations and all values of radius of curvature.…”
