of gases on solid surfaces. [9] This understanding aided the pioneering development of the first preconcentrator in 1969 by Dave et al. [10] This first preconcentrator utilized a polymer as the material for adsorption and desorption. Later, the first carbonaceous preconcentrator was developed in 1975 by Russell et al. [11] Until 1979, most preconcentration research relied on large instrumentation for analyte detection. However, in 1979, the development of the first micro gas chromatography (μGC) demonstrated that miniature detection methods are also possible. [12] The term "preconcentrator" was not used until 1989 by Thomas et al. [13] Later, the usability of oxide materials for preconcentration was explored; Casalnuovo et al. reported a SiO 2 based preconcentrator in 2001. [14] Ueno et al. introduced a metal-organic framework (MOF) based preconcentrator in 2007. [15] These major advances in preconcentrator development are shown in a timeline in Figure 1. The number of publications containing the term "gas preconcentrator," "gas pre concentrator," "gas pre-concentrator," "VOC preconcentrator" over time since 1989 is shown in Figure 2.In this review, recent developments of gas preconcentrators, preconcentrator materials, and preconcentration techniques are summarized. Different materials, their recent uses, limitations, and future potential are reviewed and discussed.

Detection of trace amounts of substance is a challenging task in many technologies. Nowadays, a lot of detection systems operate at the detection limit. It is observed especially in such areas as medicine or security; for example, in explosive detection. In medicine, the technology of trace substance detection is associated with breath analysis. Some specific diseases can change the concentration of certain molecules (biomarkers) in the exhaled air. Because of the extremely low concentration of explosives' vapour and volatile compounds in exhausted breath, very sensitive detection instruments and an efficient system for their collection are needed. For this purpose, special devices-so-called concentrators-can be applied. Available solutions of the concentrators are dedicated to a specific detection system. The paper presents some projects of a concentration system, designed to cooperate with an optoelectronic sensor using cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS). Preliminary investigation showed that this setup provides the opportunity to detect 1 ng of such explosives as TNT, PETN, RDX and HMX. The results have also shown that such instruments could be used to detect some disease biomarkers in human breath.

A conventional approach to making miniature or microscale gas chromatography (GC) components relies on silicon as a base material and MEMS fabrication as manufacturing processes. However, these devices often fail in medium-to-high temperature applications due to a lack of robust fluidic interconnects and a high-yield bonding process. This paper explores the feasibility of using metal additive manufacturing (AM), which is also known as metal 3D printing, as an alternative platform to produce small-scale microfluidic devices that can operate at a temperature higher than that which polymers can withstand. Binder jet printing (BJP), one of the metal AM processes, was utilized to make stainless steel (SS) preconcentrators (PCs) with submillimeter internal features. PCs can increase the concentration of gaseous analytes or serve as an inline injector for GC or gas sensor applications. Normally, parts printed by BJP are highly porous and thus often infiltrated with low melting point metal. By adding to SS316 powder sintering additives such as boron nitride (BN), which reduces the liquidus line temperature, we produce near full-density SS PCs at sintering temperatures much lower than the SS melting temperature, and importantly without any measurable shape distortion. Conversely, the SS PC without BN remains porous after the sintering process and unsuitable for fluidic applications. Since the SS parts, unlike Si, are compatible with machining, they can be modified to work with commercial compression fitting. The PC structures as well as the connection with the fitting are leak-free with relatively high operating pressures. A flexible membrane heater along with a resistance-temperature detector is integrated with the SS PCs for thermal desorption. The proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that the SS PC can preconcentrate and inject 0.6% headspace toluene to enhance the detector’s response.
