SmartLVGrid Platform—Convergence of Legacy Low-Voltage Circuits toward the Smart Grid Paradigm

Abstract: The current electrical system is transitioning towards a new technological model called the smart grid. The transition duration between the traditional Electric Power System (EPS) and the full smart grid depends on well-designed strategic plans, implementing transition models that are as close to smart grids as possible, based on the processes and technological resources available at the time, but always considering their economic feasibility, without which no solution thrives. In this article, we present a me… Show more

“…This paper's contribution is a requirement cycle that faces the growing complexity of microgrid design in sustainable environments. In such cases, the tendency is to couple the low-voltage distribution of energy [41] with a sustainable network of prosumer units, reducing harmful interference in the environment while integrating the energy service with its prosumers. The system is open, meaning that it will be frequently used for designing, implementing, and integrating (or removing) new prosumer arrangements on top of a legacy system that minimizes long-wire transmissions, especially inside forests.…”

“…However, the digital transformation of legacy systems still presents challenges such as a lack of support and updates, incompatibilities, and insufficient resources to interact with current systems. Alternatively, updating these systems can occur through a process of gradual and less costly technological transformation compared to the complete replacement of legacy systems [3][4][5]. Thus, using strategies that promote the digital transformation of legacy infrastructures can be a viable alternative for acquiring data and information for data-driven management of legacy systems.…”

“…However, to perform retrofitting systematically, allowing flexibility, scalability, and standardized integration with legacy systems, a reference model with well-defined protocols and interfaces is required. The SmartLVGrid metamodel enables the digital convergence of electrical systems to the smart grids paradigm [3,12]. In the literature, this metamodel has been used to achieve smart building convergence in legacy buildings to promote energy efficiency through resources for managing energy demand and electrical parameters in building installations [4,5].…”
