Smartphone-based measurements of LTE network performance

Abstract: Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology gives access to higher bandwidth and assures efficiency at network level for telecommunication operators, providing a reliable and continuous data traffic flow that allows data transmission at extremely high bit-rates. The aim of this paper is to evaluate LTE network performance in an actual urban environment, with emphasis on the downlink channel throughput. The use of statistical methods shows how standard expectations are too high with respect to a real scenario. Also, a… Show more

“…The observed values for CRS-SNR were found to lie within the interval −20 dB to 30 dB. Although the range for this parameter is not defined in the standard, measurements performed in other studies such as in [5] and [6] agree with these values.…”

“…Finally, CRS-SNR values falling out of the normal operating range were discarded. For this purpose, the results in [5] and [6] were used as a reference since the standard does not define this range. Outliers in CRS-SNR values were likely logged during handovers between LTE and other radio access technologies.…”

“…The LTE dongle used single-carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) in the uplink direction. When the channel state is evaluated several factors such as SINR, RSRP and throughput indicate the state [29]. During the measurements Key Performance Indicator (KPI) values such as media access control (MAC) throughput, reference signal received power (RSRP), transmit (TX) power, reference signal received quality (RSRQ) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were gathered.…”
