Smoking and Neuropsychiatric Disease—Associations and Underlying Mechanisms

Abstract: Despite extensive efforts to combat cigarette smoking/tobacco use, it still remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, killing more than eight million people each year. While tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases related to the four main groups—cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, and diabetes—its impact on neuropsychiatric risk is rather elusive. The aim of this review article is to emphasize the importance of smoking as a potential risk factor f… Show more

“…The contribution of active smoking to our predictive model is in line with findings for smoking as a potential risk factor for depression, which has multiple possible mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, neural damage, and neurotransmission impairment ( Hahad et al, 2021 ). Therefore, strengthening information campaigns regarding smoking's detrimental effects on mental health and encouraging people to decrease or not to start smoking, especially under highly stressful conditions, could play a part in counteracting the development depression during public emergencies.…”

“…Hahad et al 29 recently reviewed the evidence for smoking as a potential risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and psychosis, with the aim of identifying central pathophysiological mechanisms that may contribute to these relationships. Readers are referred to this review for a more comprehensive understanding of the evidence for neuropsychiatric pathophysiology.…”

“…If healthcare professionals are not motivated, they may perceive it as an additional burden on their already busy work schedule and fill it out in a superficial and hasty manner. In fact, about half of physicians see their own positive attitude and motivation for change as facilitating it [ 35 ].…”
