Background Exposure to smoking in movies has been linked to adolescent smoking uptake. However, beyond linking amount of exposure to smoking in movies with adolescent smoking, whether the way that smoking is portrayed in movies matters for influencing adolescent smoking has not been investigated. This study experimentally examined how motivation for smoking depicted in movies affects self-reported future smoking risk (a composite measure with items that assess smoking refusal self-efficacy and smoking intentions) among early adolescents. Methods A randomized laboratory experiment was used. Adolescents were exposed to movie scenes depicting one of three movie smoking motives: social smoking motive (characters smoked to facilitate social interaction); relaxation smoking motive (characters smoked to relax); or no smoking motive (characters smoked with no apparent motive, i.e., in neutral contexts and/or with neutral affect). Responses to these movie scenes were contrasted (within subjects) to participants’ responses to control movie scenes in which no smoking was present; these control scenes matched to the smoking scenes with the same characters in similar situations but where no smoking was present. A total of 358 adolescents, aged 11–14 years, participated. Results Compared with participants exposed to movie scenes depicting characters smoking with no clear motive, adolescents exposed to movie scenes depicting characters smoking for social motives and adolescents exposed to movie scenes depicting characters smoking for relaxation motives had significantly greater chances of having increases in their future smoking risk. Conclusions Exposure to movies that portray smoking motives places adolescents at particular risk for future smoking.

Ö ÖZ ZE ET T A Am ma aç ç: : Adölesanlar, aşırı ve kontrolsüz medya kullanımı sonucunda; sigara, alkol, madde bağımlılığı gibi çok ciddi sağlık problemlerine sahip olabilmektedirler. Bu çalışmada, adölesan-larda medya etkilenimine bağlı sigara kullanımının değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: : Araştırma, 18-22 Ocak 2016 tarihleri arasında tanımlayıcı tipte yapıldı. Araştırma-nın evrenini, 2015-2016 eğitim yılında Konya il merkezinde bulunan Konya Lisesinde kayıtlı 11. sınıf öğrencileri (n=335) oluşturdu. Bu grup içinde çalışmaya gönüllü olarak katılan toplam 127 öğrenciden konuya ilişkin veri toplandı. Araştırma verilerinin toplanmasında konu ile ilgili literatür taranarak araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan, öğrencilerin tanımlayıcı özellikleri ve araştırma konusu ile ilgili sorulardan oluşan bir anket formu kullanıldı. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler SPSS 15.0 programında değerlendirildi. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Öğrencilerin %24,4'ünün sigara iç-tiği, sigara deneme yaş ortalamasının 12,97±2,56 yıl olduğu saptanmıştır. Çalışmamızda, medyada sigara içerikli sahnelerle karşılaşan adölesanların ekran önünde geçirdikleri sürenin yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırma kapsamındaki sigara içen adölesanların medya etkileşim süreleri, içmeyenlere göre yüksek saptanmıştır. Adölesanların televizyon izleme, bilgisayar oyunu oynama, internete girme ve ekran önünde geçirilen sürelerindeki bu farklar istatistiksel olarak önemli bulunmuştur. Smokers’ Attitude and Intention to Quit after Seeing a Movie with Smoking

Aims: To assess the association between seeing smoking in a movie and adolescent and adult smokers’ attitude towards smoking and intention to quit. Methods: A natural experiment was conducted in a multiplex cinema. We conducted exit interviews with 4,073 movie patrons, of whom 645 (16 %) were smokers. Eleven per cent (n = 69) of the smokers were aged 14 to 17 years old. Subjects had exited 26 movies, of which 12 (46 %) contained smoking. We used multilevel mixed-effects linear regression to assess the effects of (a) exposure to movie smoking (yes vs. no), and (b) age (adolescent vs. adult smokers) on general attitude towards smoking and intention to quit smoking within the next 6 months (both scales ranged 0 – 10). Results: Smokers who saw a movie with smoking had more favourable attitudes towards smoking than those seeing a movie without smoking (p = 0.004). A significant interaction between age group and movie smoking indicated that this difference was more pronounced in adolescent smokers (p = 0.035). No significant differences were found for intentions to quit smoking. Conclusions: Study results suggest that smoking in the movies may influence young smokers to have a more favorable attitude towards smoking.
