Smooth Muscle Neoplasms of the Urinary Bladder

Abstract: We report the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and DNA ploidy findings of 18 leiomyosarcomas of the urinary bladder. In addition, we compare these malignant smooth muscle tumors with 10 cases of urinary bladder leiomyoma. The 14 male and four female patients with leiomyosarcoma ranged in age from 25 to 88 years (mean 64 years). The tumors ranged from 3.0 to 15.0 cm (mean 7.1 cm) in greatest dimension and were moderately to highly cellular, consisting of interlacing fascicles of spindled cells with mild … Show more

“…The fascicular arrangement in the present case may be found in leiomyosarcoma. Myxoid change is also frequently found in leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder [12, 13]. However, the cellularity of leiomyosarcoma is more uniform than that observed in the present case.…”

“…The main treatment consists of radical cystectomy, including removal of the uterus, cervix, and vaginal cuff in women. The procedure should include wide resection margins with a 2 to 3 cm depth free from tumor invasion [8,9]. The role of adjuvant chemotherapy remains questionable.…”

“…Main treatment consists in radical cystectomy (including removal of uterus, cervix and vaginal cuff in women). The procedure should include wide margins resection with 2-3 cm depth free from tumor invasion [15-17,19]. Neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies were used in 21% and 16% of patients at MD Anderson, respectively, and both resulted in a doubling of disease-specific survival.…”
