Snail transmitters of schistosomiasis and other mollusks of medical and economic importance at the Simplício Queda Única Hydroelectric Plant, Southeast Brazil

Abstract: Introduction: This paper presents the results of an extensive survey of freshwater mollusks in the Simplício Queda Única Hydroelectric Development area, Southeast Brazil. Methods: Mollusks were collected between 2008 and 2013. All specimens were examined for the presence of larval trematodes. Results: In total, 12,507 specimens classified into 16 genera were obtained. Known snail vectors of schistosomiasis and fascioliasis and exotic species were identified, and new records are reported. Conclusions: No specim… Show more

“…Planorbid snails belonging to the Biomphalaria genus are the intermediate hosts of S. mansoni (Barbosa et al, 2017;Simões et al, 2017). In Brazil B. glabrata, B. straminea and B. tenagophila have been detected naturally infected with S. mansoni (Fernandez et al, 2018;Palasio et al, 2019). These snails are present in extensive areas in Brazil and can be found in freshwater collections with speeds below 30 cm/s, streams, ponds, swamps, river backwaters, reservoir margins or artificial collections (irrigation and drainage ditches, water tanks and even small dams) (Ohlweiler et al, 2013).…”

“…There is no systematized information about native mollusk fauna nor exotic regarding Brazilian reservoirs, and the few existing reports about this group are restricted to large dams, mainly those related to hydroelectric plants (Thiengo et al 2005, Fernandez et al 2018, Rocha et al 2011, Fernandez et al 2014. Likewise, studies focused on mollusk fauna of small and medium-sized reservoirs in the Brazilian Northeast built for water storage are still scarce (e.g., Santos & Eskinazi-Sant'anna 2010, Almeida et al 2018, Medeiros et al 2018.…”
