Snapshot of Photovoltaics—March 2017

Abstract: Renewable energy use, especially from solar photovoltaic electricity generation, is growing at a much faster pace than the rest of the economy world-wide. The significant cost reduction of solar PV over the last decade and the zero-fuel cost volatility have increased solar PV's attractiveness. In 2016, the newly installed solar PV power of about 75 GW was more than all the world-wide installed capacity until the end of 2011. The fact that the Paris Agreement went into force on 4 November 2016 will be another a… Show more

“…Consequently, the Paris Agreement is the opportunity to strengthen the bond between today's policies and climate-neutrality before the end of the century [3]. The development of REs is a relevant item to achieve the targets, considering that more than half of the world's current CO 2 emissions are due to burning fossil fuels [4]. The relationship among energy consumption, emissions, and economic growth is well defined in the literature [5].…”

“…The incorporation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems into electrical grids has extraordinarily increased in the recent years, mainly due to the attractive installation cost, driven policies and the relevance of the environmental issues in some countries. Annual new solar PV system installations increased from 29.5 GW in 2012 to 79.4 GW in 2016, reaching a total cumulative grid connected PV installed capacity near to 440 GWp [2], [3].…”

“…It can also be implemented in a distributed generation system where electricity plant and consumer are in the same location. Until 2016, more than 310 GW of electricity worldwide was generated by photovoltaic technology [5].…”
