SO2-Generating Pads and Packaging Materials for Postharvest Conservation of Table Grapes: A Review

Abstract: Table grapes are one of the leading fruit species cultivated in several countries due to their distinguishing sensory and nutritional properties. However, grapes are a non-climacteric fruit with relatively low physiological activity after harvest, and they are highly perishable due to gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea as well to mass loss, berry softening, color degradation, and dehydration and darkening of the stem. To avoid all these difficulties, several packaging materials are used during cold storage t… Show more

“…This was also observed in our research, where both SGPs were effective in containing the percentage of berries with rot/mold compared to the Control, for which, as mentioned earlier, grapes at T2 were covered with mold to a rate exceeding 70% (Table 2) and thus deemed inedible. Moreover, the SGP, combined with cold storage, yielded appreciable results in terms of containing the phenomenon of stem browning, as reported in other studies [55]. It is also worth noting that the incidence of SO 2 -induced damage caused by SGPs, while statistically significant compared to the Control, was marginal in terms of magnitude, with values averaging below 2%.…”

“…P(Survival OC ) and P(Survival AC ), are estimated from experimental data of P. callosus survival as function of duration of various low temperature treatments with or without SO 2 (Myburgh & Kriegler, 1968) (see Table 6 in Section 3.3.2.3 for details). Today, transport at low temperature and use of SO 2 is commonly applied to storage and transport of table grapes (de Aguiar et al., 2023).…”

“…Plastic clamshells containing grape bunches subjected to FieldSO 2 were arranged in a cardboard box, and an SO 2 -generating pad (SlowSO 2 or DualSO 2 ) was placed on top according to the treatment. Finally, the liner was sealed with an adhesive tape [3].…”

“…Depending on the grape cultivar, bunches tolerate storage temperatures as low as −2 • C without significant damage from freezing. To ensure the fast cooling of the grapes, the packaging system, including the cardboard boxes and liners, should provide sufficient air movement over the berries via perforations in the packaging [2,3].…”
