Junto a otras predisposiciones básicas, el nivel de conocimiento político que los ciudadanos poseen es un elemento central en el proceso de formación y entrega de opiniones políticas. Pese a la relevancia que el conocimiento tiene, no existía investigación en Chile que permitiera medir y caracterizar los niveles de conocimiento de los chilenos y de los factores asociados a mayor o menor conocimiento. Se utilizaron 2 encuestas nacionales realizadas con muestreo probabilítico por el Centro de Estudios Públicos en 2010 a personas de 18 años y más (N = 1.495) y 2011 (N = 1.554) para medir los niveles de conocimiento y sus determinantes. A través de análisis de correlación y regresión lineal, los resultados muestran que, acorde con resultados obtenidos en la investigación comparada, los niveles de conocimiento político en Chile son en promedio bajos y que existe una gran desigualdad en la distribución de ese conocimiento. Los principales factores que determinan niveles variados de conocimiento en Chile son educación, edad, consumo de medios y frecuencia de conversaciones políticas. Despite the relevance of such knowledge, no studies have been carried out in Chile to measure and describe Chileans' political knowledge and the factors associated with higher or lower knowledge levels. Two national surveys conducted by the Centro de Estudios Públicos in 2010 (N = 1,495) and 2011 (N = 1,554), which employed probability sampling and included respondents aged 18 and older, were used to inquire into knowledge levels and their determinants. After conducting linear correlation and regression analyses, and consistently with the literature reviewed, results show that levels of political knowledge in Chile are low on average and that such knowledge is very unequally distributed. The main factors that determine variations in knowledge levels in Chile are education, age, media consumption, and frequency of political conversations. The inquiry of political science, in Jamaica, has been predominantly qualitative, with the exception of voting behavior. Among the many areas in this discipline to adapt the qualitative approach is political participation. This paper focuses on assessing political participation from a quantitative perspective. Firstly, we have constructed a political participation index using primary data, which was collected in May, 2007. Secondly, we have built an econometric model, aimed at predicting political participation in Jamaica. The model seeks to establish determinants of political participation, by selecting from the literature all factors identified and proposed as having some influence on political participation. An analysis of the model has identified several testable hypotheses about political participation. We found that there are seven factors that can be used to predict political participation. The model explains (adjusted R2) 18.8% of the variation in political participation, of which Age accounts for 11.5%, Confidence, 2.1%, Perception of Corruption, 1.6%; employment, 1.3%; parental education, 1.0%; Religiosity, 0.8%, and subjective psychological wellbeing, 0.5%. The present findings provide insights to the phenomenon, sets the platform for policy implementation and a comprehensive understanding of the framework for future empirical work.

ZusammenfassungEs ist empirisch gut belegt, dass Vereinsmitglieder nicht nur häufiger politisch partizipieren als Nichtmitglieder, sondern dass sie sich auch überdurchschnittlich für Politik interessieren und über Politik diskutieren. In diesem Artikel wird anhand von Analysen zum Zusammenhang zwischen der Vereinsmitgliedschaft und der Teilnahme an politischen Diskussionen gezeigt, dass dieser empirische Befund nur bedingt auf politische Sozialisationseffekte von Freiwilligenorganisationenzurückzuführen ist. Die Ergebnisse von multivariaten Analysen weisen darauf hin, dass nicht die Vereinsmitgliedschaft, sondern eher die politische Frühsozialisation und die Ausbildung zu einer vermehrten Teilnahme an politischen Diskussionen führen. Vereine entfalten primär dann eine politisierende Wirkung, wenn sie die Möglichkeit bieten, Organisations-und Kommunikationsfähigkeit en zu erlernen respektive zu kultivieren, oder wenn sie einen Beitrag zur Konfliktfähigkeit ihrer Mitglieder leisten.
