Social cost-benefit analysis of hydrogen mobility in Europe

Abstract: The deployment of hydrogen technologies in the energy mix and the use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV) are expected to significantly reduce European greenhouse emissions. We carry out a social cost-benefit analysis to estimate the period of socio-economic conversion, period for which the replacement of gasoline internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV) by FCV becomes socio-economically profitable. In this study, we considered a hydrogen production mix of five technologies: natural gas reforming processes … Show more

“…In addition, social cost-benefit analysis is mainly conducted to review the feasibility of implementing development policies that take into account the value of the environment [40][41][42][43][44][45]. The costs of implementing development projects and policies are easy to quantify.…”

“…By contrast, the concerns in the social cost-benefit analysis are the social benefits that have been affected by the policy and the calculation of the effects of environmental improvements, among others. This improvement effect-a social benefit-is currently being regarded as the benefit of reducing carbon emissions, and a system exists that can be used to assess the value of carbon per unit [39][40][41].…”

“…More recently, a social cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for hydrogen market penetration has been investigated in some significant works: the progressive replacement of gasoline ICEV by hydrogen FCV in the European market over the period 2015-2055 has been assessed in ( Sun et al, 2010 ;Creti et al, 2015 ). This study provides a comprehensive support scheme that bridges the gap between three main dimensions: (1) market requirements with the reduced cost of cars and hydrogen fuelling stations, (2) sustainability and climate requirements, and (3) hydrogen technology development ( Cantuarias-Villessuzanne et al, 2016 ) targeting to lower or replace the use of noble materials like platinum in fuel cells and electrolyzers.…”
