Social distance versus spatial distance in R&D cooperation: Empirical evidence from European collaboration choices in micro and nanotechnologies

Abstract: Spurred on by the theory of network formation, and by the geography of innovation, traditional analyses on R&D cooperation face a deep renewal. This paper assesses the extent to which these renewals find an empirical validation. Based on the research projects submitted to the 6-super-th Framework Program of the European Union, a binary choice model is used in order to highlight the existence of network and spatial effects alongside other microeconomic determinants of cooperation. Our findings suggest that netw… Show more

“…Autant-Bernard et al (2007) find that relational distance by means of the firms` position within a network matters more than their geographical location. Maggioni et al (2007) suggest that a region`s knowledge production is mainly influenced, besides by regions that are located close in geographical space, also by regions that are close in relational space.…”

“…Second, these knowledge flows are localized to the extent that individuals and inter--personal networks are also localized, essentially because individuals are not very mobile in space (Breschi and Lissoni, 2009). This contributes to explain why geography end--up playing little or even no role, once social network is accounted for (Autant--Bernard et al 2007;Maggioni et al, 2007).…”

“…The so--called "proximity paradox" argues that the drivers of network formation should be distinguished from the determinants of innovative performance. If proximity and network embeddedness clearly explain the formation of network relations (Autant--Bernard, et al 2007;Cassi and Plunket, 2012), interactive learning and knowledge flows (Agrawal et al 2006;Breschi and Lissoni, 2009), they may not necessarily benefit innovative performance, they may even be harmful for interactive learning (Boschma, and Frenken, 2009). This paper aims to empirically investigate the proximity paradox.…”

“…Despite the high variance in databases, levels of analysis and estimation methods, the economic literature on research networks financed under the EU Framework programmes (Autant-Bernard et al 2007;Balland 2012;Caloghirou et al 2004;Breschi and Cusmano 2004;Protogerou et al 2010;Lata and Scherngell 2010;Barber 2009, 2011) shows the existence of an oligopolistic structure in which a restricted number of institution localized in central, high-income regions play a major role along a core-periphery pattern. Thus, we can expect the interregional network structure also to be heavily influenced by the spatial distribution of members and coordinators in the different European regions.…”
