Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic: quantifying the practice in Michigan – a “hotspot state” early in the pandemic – using a volunteer-based online survey

Abstract: Background Public Health policies related to social distancing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic helped slow the infection rate. However, individual-level factors associated with social distancing are largely unknown. “…The online survey approach removes the interviewer bias and allows for comprehensive geographical coverage across India (Evans and Mathur, 2005; Ilieva et al , 2002). In addition, the digital data collection method was most appropriate amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as the COVID-19 protocols could not permit field surveys at difficult times (Cassidy-Bushrow et al , 2021; Lefever et al , 2007).…”

The degree of stress from social distancing recommendations was selfreported using a four-point scale: a lot (1), somewhat (2), a little (3), not at all (4).…”

“…Social distancing has been widely discussed in Pandemic Influenza ( 48 , 49 ), and simulation validation of targeted social distancing design has been performed ( 50 ). Improving/increasing social space and social distancing seemed to be a pair of mutually exclusive strategies ( 51 , 52 ), which implied the dilemma that the pandemic created for people: they not only had to maintain a social distance for effective pandemic prevention and control but also had to improve social health through interactions ( 53 , 54 ). A variety of solutions to this dilemma were provided by these works through their specific forms of realization.…”
