Social Housing Life Cycle Management: Workflow for the Enhancement of Digital Management Based on Building Information Modelling (BIM)

Abstract: The management of the life cycle of large publicly owned social housing complexes requires a large amount of human and technological resources, the optimization of which is a desirable and shared objective. This article proposes a workflow for the enhancement of these management processes based on BIM (Building Information Modelling), a methodology capable of integrating architectural information into a three-dimensional graphic model. The proposed workflow defines the basic characteristics of the BIM model or… Show more

“…It plays a key role in sharing information among engineers, project managers, and technicians in different life cycle stages of the buildings, meaning that different stakeholders can communicate technical complexities and arrive at a smart decision, hopefully improving the sustainability and reducing the risk and cost of the buildings. The digital twin (BIM model) has been designed for the lifecycle management of different systems including social housing [51], railway turnover system [52], and subway system [50]. The integration of the BIM models has dramatically lowered carbon emissions and capital costs over the whole lifecycle of systems.…”

“…Even though these methods provide a tool with many functionalities, they are usually used only in the process of building design. As stated by [1][2][3], there is great potential in the use of these technologies for the entire life cycle of buildings, mainly because the costs of operating buildings are among the largest costs, exceeding the purchase price of the property.…”

“…This Special Issue, "BIM-Based Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment for Buildings", gathers some of the advances that are currently taking place in the integration of Building Information Modeling platforms in the process of minimizing the impacts that buildings cause throughout their entire life cycle. This Special Issue covers three important areas of study: (1) workflows in LCA calculation procedures based on BIM platforms; (2) the automation of Building Assessment Analysis processes via the integration of LCA and BIM; and (3) the implementation of BIM platforms for the life cycle management of buildings.…”
