Social Inclusion Tactics for Persons With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Traveling Using Verbal Behavior

Abstract

Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities travel for different reasons. Often, individuals with disabilities require specialized medical care or treatments that may not be available locally. Families may need to travel to access these services or consult with specialists. Some individuals with disabilities may benefit from specific educational programs, therapies, or schools in different regions or countries. Traveling allows these individuals with disabilities to visit family members and friends or participate in social activities that promote their social development and integration. Traveling provides opportunities for recreation, leisure activities, and experiences that enrich their lives and broaden their perspectives. However, traveling with an individual with IDD may require additional planning and accommodations to ensure their safety, comfort, and accessibility needs are met throughout the journey. However, social inclusion for IDD during travel poses significant barriers due to communication difficulties and social stigma.
