Social media and COVID‐19: Can social distancing be quantified without measuring human movements?

Abstract: The COVID‐19 outbreak has posed significant threats to international health and the economy. In the absence of treatment for this virus, public health officials asked the public to practice social distancing to reduce the number of physical contacts. However, quantifying social distancing is a challenging task and current methods are based on human movements. We propose a time and cost‐effective approach to measure how people practice social distancing. This study proposes a new method based on utilizing the f… Show more

“…Among topic models, we chose latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) [43], which has been considered an effective model [44]. LDA has been utilized for different applications, such as analyzing medical documents to understand clinical notes [45], exploring the content of research papers to identify trends and patterns [46][47][48], and mining social media to understand online discussions [49][50][51][52].…”

“…Using the Mallet, we removed stopwords (e.g., "the") and obtained P(T|D) for three sets of topics, including 10, 25, and 50 topics. To define the LDA hyperparameters, we followed the literature [46,56] and selected β at 0.01 and α based on 50 T , where T is the number of topics.…”

“…and researchers have emphasized the importance of social distancing in disease prevention through modeling and simulation (Chinazzi et al 2020 ). However, assessing people’s travel behavior is an important way to quantify social distancing (Anderson et al 2020 ). Many countries and cities have implemented social distancing measures such as work suspension (Ruiz-Frutos et al 2021 ), school closure (Zhang et al 2020 ) and limits on bars and restaurants (Abouk and Heydari 2021 ).…”

“…A large number of studies have utilized Twitter data to understand public discussions around the COVID-19 pandemic. These studies have investigated a wide range of topics related to COVID-19, such as understanding public communication using qualitative content analysis [18], word frequency analysis and sentiment analysis [19], and topic modeling [20][21][22], examining misinformation [23], and measuring social distancing [24].…”
