Social Pension Scheme and Health Inequality: Evidence From China's New Rural Social Pension Scheme

Abstract: Health equality is an essential component of social justice, and the social policies should be as conducive to promoting health equality as possible. Based on the data from China, this article uses the regression discontinuity design method and the technique of decomposition of concentration index to examine whether the social pension schemes can significantly reduce health inequality among the residents, and tries to compute the contribution rate of pension benefit in alleviating the health inequality. Our re… Show more

“…Using Bayesian network analysis, we identi ed age as a common cause of whether to receive NRPS and self-rated health, although there was no direct causal relationship between the two variables. This contrasted with those of Yuan et al [27], who has reported more positive results using the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data. Possible explanations are that we used different data and that the effect of NRPS on health status will probably be linked or masked by age.…”

“…According to some literature, the bandwidth is affected by sample size and should be selected based on the minimum bandwidth when the sample size is insu cient, otherwise large bias will result [39,40]. Consequently, the small sample size of each subgroup may be contributing to the instability of sensitivity analysis, which had also been occurred in similar studies [27]. In this study, as bandwidth selection was based on optimal criteria, the results of the regression models remained valid.…”

“…The insurers are required to pay the medical expenses in advance when seeking medical treatment, then a certain proportion of medical expenses are reimbursed after treatment. A large amount of prepayment may become one of the reasons restricting low-income groups from seeking timely medical treatment ( 36 ), which may potential increase risk of ADL limitations due to lack of heath care access. To reduce the healthcare burden for those with serious chronic diseases, in recent years the reimbursement cap for more than 20 chronic diseases including diabetes has been increased to 140,000 Yuan per year, compared to 6,000 Yuan for general diseases in outpatient clinics ( 37 ).…”

“…This paper contributes to the strand of literature that examines the effects of the NRPS. Most of extant studies focused more on its effect on labor supply, child transfer payments, medical service utilization, mental health, and health inequality ( 38 , 40 – 43 ). However, we innovatively complement the effect of the NRPS from the perspective of dietary health.…”
