Social Robotics in Education: A Survey on Recent Studies and Applications

Abstract: Over the last years, social robots have been conceived to be used in various domains and for different purposes. This paper presents a survey on different applications and aspects of social robots in education. Different contexts are seen, ranging from children education, until higher education. A variety of applications and studies are reported, in areas like as second language tutoring, teaching assistance, and storytelling. Robotic platforms used in these applications are observed, and means of evaluation o… Show more

“…In a large part of the conducted research, robots have been humanoid [1][2][3][4][5] but other works used animal-or toy-like robots [6][7][8] or robots that are not meant to look like human-familiar shapes [9,10]. A wide array of applications has emerged [11,12]; these applications include telepresence [13][14][15], education [16][17][18][19], care, assistance [20,21], reception [22], and children's companionship [23,24]. The use of robots in these social contexts has benefited enormously from advancements in research across several domains, such as computer vision [25,26], natural language processing, conversational systems [21,27], and expression and gesture recognition and generation [28,29].…”

“…Recently, the usefulness of telepresence concepts and systems has emerged in several areas of human-human interaction due to the spread of COVID-19, which pushed the adoption of contactless interaction solutions [18,19]. Telepresence has benefited from advances in social robotics [20,21] and telecommunication technologies but still faces challenges like controllability, stability and autonomy [22]. Furthermore, social presence has been presented as a possible evolution in telepresence where social cues of the persons in interaction are efficiently relayed.…”
