Social Robots in Hospitals: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Hospital environments are facing new challenges this century. One of the most important is the quality of services to patients. Social robots are gaining prominence due to the advantages they offer; in particular, several of their main uses have proven beneficial during the pandemic. This study aims to shed light on the current status of the design of social robots and their interaction with patients. To this end, a systematic review was conducted using WoS and MEDLINE, and the results were exhaustive analyzed… Show more

“…The use of social robots in healthcare contexts seems quite promising. Robots can promote a wide array of positive effects, including storing data, preventing isolation-related challenges, and facilitating edutainment activities in the pediatric ward [ 19 ]. The incorporation of interactive social robots as social mediators, instructors, or screening agents is a work that is still in progress and there is a great interest in integrating evidence-based treatment techniques.…”

“…The type, severity, and duration of the illness (and the associated degree of suffering), as well as the kind of therapies administered, can significantly affect the general conditions and, especially, the emotional resources of sick children. Not surprisingly, numerous studies have been conducted with long-term patients affected, for example, by leukemia or cancer and/or undergoing chemotherapy [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Although robotic technologies are increasingly being deployed in health care and hospital settings to serve functions ranging from surgery to rehabilitation to foster the well-being of patients and staff [ 12 , 13 ], studies examining the use of robotics on pediatric wards for play-educational purposes are still relatively scarce [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…One primary goal of current robotics research is to develop companion robots that are able to engage children in close physical and affective proximity in contexts such as healthcare (Dawe et al, 2019;González-González et al, 2021;Kidd & Breazeal, 2008;Westlund et al, 2018) and education (Ahmad et al, 2017;Belpaeme et al, 2018;Mubin et al, 2013;Toh et al, 2016). Given that learning and behavioral change can take weeks or months to achieve, a robot companion must be able not only to display smart social and characterize, explain and measure the relationship between children and robots more effectively.…”
