Social sciences have so much more to bring to climate studies in forest research: a French case study

Abstract: & Key message Faced with wicked problems such as climate change, managers of complex forest social-ecological systems require more than experimental sciences alone. Yet, mitigation and adaptation studies underuse social sciences in forest research, as shown here with the French case study. Therefore, we stress the value of social sciences for forest researchers, and extend this reflection to research funding bodies, forest authorities, foresters, and society at large. We identify training and publications as t… Show more

“…According to this vision, the enhancement of forest ES (carbon storage) stops where another (timber production, habitat preservation) begins. More specifically, we recommend proactively inviting any stakeholder showing interest in the carbon offsetting to take part in the process [5]. If required, distinct discussion arenas can be initiated to prevent the reemergence of long-standing conflicts (e.g., ethical, technical, scientific committees).…”

“…To cite only mitigation, a sizeable body of literature explores the direct influence of forest management on above-and below-ground carbon Forests 2021, 12, 386 2 of 21 storage [4]. However, mitigation is rarely tackled from the perspective of its social or economic consequences (e.g., [5])-with the notable exceptions of investigations into the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) program [6] and in some European case studies [7,8].…”

“…Since the first IPCC reports, social sciences have increasingly contributed to climate research (Kelly and Adger, 2000;Adger, 2003;Pelling and High, 2005;Smit and Wandel, 2006;Adger et al, 2009). Their contributions to climate science, and particularly to adaptation science, have been acknowledged by many researchers (Conrad, 2009;ISSC/UNESCO, 2013;Weaver et al, 2014;Ford et al, 2016;Holm and Winiwarter, 2017;Fouqueray and Frascaria-Lacoste, 2020). Yet, they remain insufficiently considered according to a part of the climate science community (Yearley, 2009;Weaver et al, 2014;Victor, 2015).…”

“…Even within the sphere of physical science there is a need to integrate experimental and modeling approaches from a range of disciplines when researching climate change, as its effects cannot be neatly compartmentalized (Gornish et al, 2013). Nonetheless, an understanding of the natural processes involved is not sufficient to make useful decisions on adaptation; insights from the social sciences are needed to inform what Fouqueray and Frascaria-Lacoste (2020) call "an integrative and interdisciplinary science for adaptation". With the synergy of top-down and bottom-up methods shown to be most effective, there is a need to combine indigenous, local and scientific knowledge, which can only be done if outstanding research and information gathering is completed early in the process (Portner et al, 2022).…”
