“…A major theme identified in 9 of the 14 included articles was the tension in conceptualizing sex trafficking. Six studies had the aim of investigating or clarifying conceptions of sex trafficking and associated responses to it ( De Shalit et al, 2020 ; Kaye et al, 2014 ; Matheson & Finkel, 2013 ; Millar & O’Doherty, 2020 ; Morselli & Savoie-Gargiso, 2014 ; Sethi, 2007 ). Three did not initially intend to explore the issue but tensions in defining sex trafficking featured prominently in their findings ( Hanley et al, 2006 ; McDonald & Timoshkina, 2004 , 2007 ).…”

“… De Shalit et al (2020) investigated the conceptualization of sex trafficking among representatives from agencies providing health, social, or legal services to sex trafficking victim/survivors; they found that most did not see consent or agency existing within the sex industry, and thus considered all sex work as trafficking. Matheson and Finkel (2013) found similar confusion around sex trafficking and sex work was present among some service providers in Vancouver, British Columbia.…”

“…Social workers ensure access to education on social injustices, help individuals address biopsychosocial challenges, and practice from a lens of cultural inclusivity (NASW, 2022). While social workers have a rich history of working with survivors of human trafficking (De Shalit et al, 2021), there is limited knowledge available about the role of social workers in addressing human trafficking of athletes. This commentary outlines the need for sport social workers to expand their practice to include heightened efforts to combat human trafficking.…”

“…The importance of this cannot be understated, but it must be understood as part of the assemblage that uses that very same rhetoric to justify sweeping criminal justice responses. As evidenced in the political rhetoric around Bill 132, rape culture has justified the expansion of other carceral institutions, including more funding for policing services and investment in antitrafficking programs, which often tend to disproportionately target sex workers and racialized people and expand processes of criminalization(De Shalit et al 2020). Sociolegal scholars and criminologists have mapped how these seemingly benevolent projects expand criminal justice enforcement, which tends to disproportionately and negatively affect racialized students(Kim et al 2010).In January 2021, the Ontario government has announced a pledge to amend and expand Bill 132.…”
