Social support for physical activity and perceptions of control in early Parkinson's disease

Abstract: This is believed to be the first study looking at factors influencing physical activity participation in PD. Issues related to support for exercise from physicians and organisational issues of support groups for PD are discussed. Directions for future research are provided, which should aid in the identification of strategies to increase physical activity levels in those with PD.

“…The ICF framework has previously been used to describe facilitators of and barriers to PA in persons with various neurological conditions (Mulligan et al, 2012;Ravenek & Schneider, 2009;Vissers et al, 2008). The ICF covers all aspects of a disability and is therefore suitable for describing the complexity in PA, as well as the interplay between PA and contextual factors (Rimmer, 2006).…”

“…This interaction can be conceptualized by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) (World Health Organization, 2001). The ICF has been used to describe the perceptions of PA in persons with Parkinson's disease (Ravenek & Schneider, 2009) and facilitators of and barriers to PA in persons with spinal cord injury (Vissers et al, 2008). To the best of our knowledge no study has described the interaction between PA, functioning and disability and contextual factors (environmental and personal factors) in persons with late effects of polio.…”

“…On the other hand, informational support (e.g., advice/knowledge provided by other people) may influence that people with PD participate in physical activity, and social as well as emotional support can facilitate that they engage in taking a walk [25]. It would be of interest to investigate whether some of these qualitative findings could be verified in a larger quantitative study.…”

“…4 -6 Less is known about factors that lead to routine exercise among people with PD. Indeed, few factors associated with exercise behavior in people with PD (eg, social support, desire to control disease progression) 7 have been identified. Consequently, physical therapists have limited knowledge of intervention strategies that might be used to help their patients with PD sustain the benefits of a prescribed program of exercise following an episode of care.…”
