Social touch deprivation during COVID-19: effects on psychological wellbeing and craving interpersonal touch

Abstract: Social touch has positive effects on social affiliation and stress alleviation. However, its ubiquitous presence in human life does not allow the study of social touch deprivation ‘in the wild’. Nevertheless, COVID-19-related restrictions such as social distancing allowed the systematic study of the degree to which social distancing affects tactile experiences and mental health. In this study, 1746 participants completed an online survey to examine intimate, friendly and professional touch experiences during C… Show more

“…To reduce the spread of COVID-19, many countries instituted social distancing policies restricting individuals from social interaction to curtail the spread of the virus ( Matrajt and Leung, 2020 ; World Health Organization, 2020a ). While these measures are essential to prevent the virus from spreading, limitations on social interaction could cause unintended psychological harm ( Cudjoe and Kotwal, 2020 ; Von Mohr et al, 2021 ). Imposed isolation can lead to increased negative emotions, including boredom, anger, and loneliness ( Montano and Acebes, 2020 ).…”

“…COVID-19-related restrictions have allowed the systematic study of the degree to which social distancing also affects tactile experiences and mental health. In fact, it is undeniable that social touch has positive effects on social affiliation and stress alleviation [ 42 ]. Moreover, eye contact as well as other forms of non-verbal communication play an important role in human interactions.…”

“…Physical contact, mediated by the sense of touch, is an essential part of social communication providing the experience of actual togetherness, which can be defined as social presence ( van Erp and Toet, 2015 ). In case of prolonged periods of social distancing and isolation, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical distancing has been prescribed in order to limit the diffusion of infections, deprivation of interpersonal touch has been associated with greater loneliness and anxiety and people showed to crave intimate tactile interactions, underlining the importance of feeling the physical presence of others for psychological well-being ( Banerjee et al, 2021 ; von Mohr et al, 2021 ). Like never before, social distancing measures have been globally imposed, offering a new lens through which the psychosocial impact of deprivation of tactile interactions should be examined.…”
