Society, Her or Me? An Explanatory Model of Intimate Femicide Among Male Perpetrators in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract: Intimate femicide perpetrators are rarely studied despite their important role as drivers of violence. “…Our findings seem to corroborate the reports of Di Marco and Evans (2020), which analyzed narratives of femicide, reporting that speeches of perpetrators are shaped by sociocultural elements in which the idea that hegemonic masculinity (i.e., attitudes that support male dominance) endorses and naturalizes beliefs and attitudes, mostly prevails. Thus, the intimate partner is seen as a mere object that, if they cannot belong to the perpetrator, will not belong to anyone else.…”

“…The fact that he uses a biomedical label ("violent personality") illustrates how certain medicalizing discourses shape the stories and accounts of these men. While not all of the participants used expert theories and terms to make sense of their actions, the presence of psychological categories shows the presence of dominant theories in penal devices, as has been found by other studies(Di Marco and Evans 2020;Di Marco 2022).…”

“…I was like a car out of control, spinning out of control…" References to being "locked up" [caer preso] as a turning point and, simultaneously, a biographical opportunity were frequent in the life stories of young men from marginalized areas. These narratives were more frequent amongst those men who used redemption narratives (Ferrito et al 2012;Liem and Richardson 2014;Di Marco and Evans 2020). Expressions like, "I had the chance to be locked up," "it was the best thing that could have happened to me," and "it was the only thing that put me back on track" not only refer to changes in their social contexts, resources, and potential pathways but also their worldviews.…”

“…A growing body of work in criminology focuses on the narratives developed by offenders and victims to describe their experiences (PRESSER and SANDBERG, 2015a). This "narrative criminology" has explored narratives of homicide, including the accounts within them, with a view to understanding the construction of meanings and the explanations given by murderers (see, for example, BROOKMAN, 2013;DILMON and TIMOR, 2014;DI MARCO and EVANS, 2020;HENSON and OLSON, 2010;PETTIGREW, 2020;PRESSER, 2004). However, few studies have looked at the functioning of these explanations within the structure of the narrative as modelled by Labov and Waletzky (1997).…”
