Society's Perceptions of African Elephants and their Relative Influence towards the Conservation of Elephants

Abstract: Africa`s elephant population continues to decline towards extinction in the face of globally crafted elephant conservation policies. Thus far, society questions the initial design structure, contribution of local communities and relevance of these policies. Using cross-sectional survey data from Zimbabwe the paper investigates local communities` perceptions of elephants and their relative influence towards conservation of elephants using the multinomial logistic regression model. “…People in rural areas tend to prefer to protect and conserve species that they consider beneficial, while those that may cause some harm to the population or domestic livestock are considered undesirable and they thus seek to eradicate them from their properties (Rust & Marker, 2013). When there are major conflicts between wildlife and humans, and when they do not perceive tangible benefits from it, a negative attitude usually arises among local people towards the conservation of the species involved (Taruvinga & Mushhunje, 2014).…”

“…Elephants are poached because of their ivory (Goldenberg et al, 2016), and though it is prohibited to hunt them, many poachers still take the risk, because of the profit generated in the market (Goldenberg et al, 2016). Many elephants are also killed because they are feared and destroy goods (Taruvinga & Mushunje, 2014;Anastácio et al, 2014). But in all cultures they are seen as symbols of nature, used as flagship species (Lee & Graham, 2006).…”

“…How can poor people live and share resources with these big and charismatic creatures? Elephants' spots and home ranges are being invaded by people in worryingly increasing numbers, and conflicts happen frequently, ending in people or elephant deaths (Douglas-Hamilton et al, 2005;Pinter-Wollman, 2012;Taruvinga & Mushunje, 2014), even inside protected areas (Craig, 2013). So, how can this problem be dealt with from an educational perspective?…”

“…However, animal or plant can be perceived as both advantages and disadvantages at once. Reflecting on finding of Taruvinga and Mushunje (2014), the elephant in Africa is considered as the animal that damage the crops and predatory, but also has a potential source of income. Consequently, it is necessary to make the community do not spread negative prejudice over the nature of the animal's ferocity (Friedrich et al, 2014).…”
