Socio-environmental correlates of physical activity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Abstract: BackgroundStudy of the causes of the reduced levels of physical activity in patients with COPD has been scarce and limited to biological factors.AimTo assess the relationship between novel socio-environmental factors, namely dog walking, grandparenting, neighbourhood deprivation, residential surrounding greenness and residential proximity to green or blue spaces, and amount and intensity of physical activity in COPD patients.MethodsThis cross-sectional study recruited 410 COPD patients from five Catalan munici… Show more

“…Only a fraction of the reduction in DL PA in patients with sarcoidosis could be explained by the resting and exercise functional parameters examined here, suggesting that it may be important to investigate the influence of environmental and sociodemographic factors in future studies. In support of this, a study of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease found that dog ownership or having small children was significantly associated with time spent in moderate to sustained physical activities (3‐6 metabolic equivalents) . Place of residence and psychological factors also seem to be important influences on the level of physical activity.…”

“…For example, our group has recently shown that patients with COPD who have a physically active loved one have a higher likelihood of being physically active themselves [40]. Still related to socialenvironmental factors, Arbillaga-Etxarri et al [41] recently observed that dog walking and grandparenting are associated with a higher amount and intensity of physical activity in patients with COPD. In another recent study it was shown that patients with COPD who sleep better (e.g., non-fragmented sleep) are more physically active in the following day [42].…”

“…Indeed, a report from the World Health Organization [ 13 ] suggests that interventions adapted to the local context and/or using existing social support and community structures are the most successful. In COPD, patients who live with others, walk the dog, take care of grandchildren or have an active partner have higher physical activity levels than those who do not, regardless of COPD severity and other individual characteristics [ 14 16 ], which suggests that interpersonal and environmental factors are key factors to include in future interventions.…”
