“…In biosocial geography the context of living (in places) becomes embodied through the "imprint of entangled biological and social exposures" (Prior et al, 2018: 2). This is of particular relevance to head and neck cancer as prevalence is linked to socio-economic disadvantage (Taib et al, 2018). Northern England, the setting for our research, has the highest incidence of head and neck cancer in the UK (Price et al, 2010).…”

“…Smoking, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, and human papillomavirus are associated risk factors for HANC. 13 More than two-thirds of HANC survivors are men 14 and typically come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, 15 with a significant history of smoking and alcohol consumption. 16 Pre-treatment physical activity levels and physical fitness are typically low, particularly in females, older individuals, and those with lower educational levels.…”

“…Notably, HANC is regarded among the most debilitating of all cancers 13 and HANC survivors are significantly frailer with more mobility impairments than individuals with other solid malignancies. 21 Shoulder and neck dysfunction and pain resulting from radiation and surgical procedures used to treat HANC are common, with many of the treatment-related issues unique to this cancer cohort.…”

“…In Scotland, the city of Glasgow has the highest rates of head and neck cancer, and one of the highest rates of socio‐economic deprivation and working age mortality 3,4 . There are previous studies investigating the association of deprivation in a heterogeneous group of head and neck cancer patients, but no evidence proving the association of deprivation in a homogenous group of OPSCC patients or investigating the outcomes of HPV(DNA)‐positive patients between different socio‐economic backgrounds 5,6 …”
