Socioeconomic development and young adults’ propensity of living in one-person households: Compositional and contextual effects

Abstract: BACKGROUNDThe proportion of young adults living in one-person households (OPHs) has increased remarkably worldwide. Recent literature suggests that socioeconomic development established favorable conditions for individuals to live alone. Few studies have yet examined the complex relationship between contextual-level socioeconomic development, individual-level factors, and living in OPHs. This urbanization has been paralleled by a decrease in mean household size, from 4.4 to 3.1 persons, 16 and an escalation in singleperson households, 17 leading to diminished intra-household interactions. Furthermore, disease protective behaviors, such as adherence to public health guidelines and engagement in preventive measures, might also impact the proportion of individuals living alone.…”

“…More than 150 million families are only children due to the country's One Child Policy from 1980 to 2016 (Guo & Xu, 2014). Young adults, especially in urban settings, live in one‐person households longer and postpone marriage (Cheung & Yeung, 2015, 2021). Families are becoming more similar structurally to their Western counterparts (Hu & To, 2017): The number of divorced and remarried families is increasing; double‐income no‐kid (DINK) families are now more fashionable among urban young adults and surrogate and LGBT families are emerging as open phenomena.…”
