Socioeconomic implications of biosecurity practices in small-scale dairy farms

Abstract: Training programs should be arranged to change the attitudes and perception of small-scale producers concerning poor biosecurity practices. In order to encourage producers to increase biosecurity scores, regulations regarding financial support and penalties could be quite useful at both the regional and national levels.

“…The relationship between the consumers' socioeconomic characteristics and fish consumption levels and frequency were analyzed using correlation coefficients. The Fisher's exact test (Chi-square) was used to verify possible associations between the consumers' characteristics and fish consumption habits (Can, 2014;Can & Altuğ, 2014). Multiple linear regression (MLR) was used to examine the influence of determinants on fish consumption.…”

“…Different biosecurity scoring systems have been developed and documented in the literature for poultry and pig production systems (Gelaude, Schlepers, Verlinden, Laanen, & Dewulf, 2014;Rodrigues da Costa et al, 2019;Silva, Corbellini, Linhares, Baker, & Holtkamp, 2018;Silva et al, 2019;Van Limbergen et al, 2018) but, from the authors' knowledge, there is only one study documenting as biosecurity scoring system in dairy farms (Can & Altuğ, 2014). An on-line self-assessment system (Biocheck cattle 1 ) provides an evaluation of a farm biosecurity level and also delivers prioritized recommendations but its scoring system is not yet described in the scientific literature.…”

“…İkiden fazla sayıda sosyoekonomik ve coğrafik alt grupların karşılaştırılmasında, normal dağılım şartının sağlanamaması nedeniyle Kruskal Wallis H testinden yararlanılmış ve P<0.05 düzeyindeki anlamlı farklılıklar için ikili karşılaştırmalar Mann Whitney U testi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. GS ile sosyoekonomik değişkenler arasındaki ilişki Spearman's rho ile belirlenmiştir [8,24,25] .…”
